Portugal vs. France
Minute Commentary
120' EURO 2016
Substitute Eder struck in extra time to secure a first majoy trophy for Portugal, and they did it almost all without Cristiano Ronaldo. The inspirational captain was taken off injured after 25 minutes, but his teammates gave everything to beat Euro 2016 hosts France one-nil at the Stade de France. The winning shot was even an impressive one, the towering Eder evading two challenges before finding the bottom corner from all of 25 yards. Moments earlier Raphael Guerreiro had struck the crossbar with a superb free kick, Andre-Pierre Gignac having hit the post for France just before the end of normal time. The game was one of few chances overall, with both sides committed and superbly organised to the last, although Antoine Griezmann glanced a close-range header over the bar on one of the rare occasions anybody got ahead of the colossal Pepe. It was far from a classic final in terms of entertainment, but as a display of football proficiency there have been few better. That sums up Euro 2016; sometimes short on thrills, but for the technically-minded a new high. Only four years to go until the next one.
120' CHAMPIONS
Cristiano Ronaldo lets out a guttural roar as he lifts the trophy and the confetti flies. Portugal are champions of Europe for the first time.
120' MEDAL TIME
Fernando Santos takes his time with the hugs as his players queue up behind him to pick up their precious medals. Few would have fancied Portugal to win this tournament, but anybody who did deserves a medal themselves.
120' WALK WITHOUT SHAME
The France players troop past the attendant officials to receive their runners-up medals, all with thunderous looks on their faces. They should remain proud of their performances on home soil and the faith they've restored in the French national side.
120' SHOCK AND AWE
A giant trophy is wheeled onto the pitch as the Portugal players wave to their fans, looking as stunned as the audience will be around the world. Without ever lighting up this tournament, they've played in a certain, very consistent way and it's been absolutely vindicated.
120' FULL TIME PORTUGAL 1 FRANCE 0
It's all over here at the Stade de France; PORTUGAL have won the 2016 European Championships! Their players jump for joy, with Ronaldo first onto the pitch to give out the hugs, while the defeated France players crumple to the ground. They can scarcely believe what's happened here tonight.
120' YELLOW CARD
Rui Patricio picks up a last-minute yellow card for time-wasting.
120' LAST CHANCE
Kingsley Coman knocks down a cross, and Anthony Martial sees a shot blocked at close range. With that you can see the colour drain from French faces.
120' TWO MINUTES
The crowd greet the news that there will be two minutes of additional time with an impassioned cheer. They have to still believe that their team can eliminate the deficit.
119' RONALDO IN CHARGE
Cristiano Ronaldo, who almost seems to have wrested the managerial reins from Fernando Santos, shoves Guerreiro back onto the pitch while bawling instructions in his junior teammate's ear. It's nearly all over now.
118' GUERREIRO HURT
Guerreiro overstretches while getting a vital touch on a through ball aimed at Andre-Pierre Gignac, and the full back has to be helped from the pitch. Portugal have used all three substitutions and need to get him back on as quickly as possible.
115' YELLOW CARD
Paul Pogba, determined not to give up just yet, pursues Joao Mario 40 yards up the pitch and eventually earns himself a yellow card by taking man rather than ball.
113' FRANCE LOOKING VULNERABLE
Ricardo Quaresma overhits his pass to Nani as Portugal storm forward on the break; France were caught upfield there and looked all at sea.
110' SUBSTITUTION
France throw on Anthony Martial for Moussa Sissoko; let's see whether the precocious forward can save this tournament for France.
109' GOAL!!! PORTUGAL
It's there for Portugal! EDER takes a pass infield in his lengthy stride, holds off a couple of challenges and hits his shot low from all of 25 yards. Without carrying too much pace, the accuracy of the strike carries it past Hugo Lloris' despairing dive and into the bottom-left corner of the net. Is there time for France to come back?
108' OFF THE BAR
Justice is not done to France again as Moutinho's shot from range hits the hand of Eder, who is standing just in front of Laurent Koscielny. The centre back is the man penalised and promptly booked. Raphael Guerreiro steps up and curls the free kick over the wall and against the quivering crossbar from 25 yards.
106' EXTRA TIME: SECOND HALF
The second period of extra time is underway, and straight away Joao Moutinho goes down seemingly hurt as Blaise Matuidi goes in with a high boot. The odd thing is that there didn't seem to be a connection.
105' EXTRA TIME: HALF TIME
We've reached the halfway point of extra time; Portugal had the best chance to score the winner, but Lloris kept out Eder's headed effort. The action will be restarting in mere moments so don't go anywhere.
104' NO WAY PAST LLORIS
Quaresma sends a dangerous corner screaming into the middle, where the towering Eder heads downwards with power. Hugo Lloris, brilliant throughout the tournament, reacts at top speed to stick out a glove and divert the effort away from goal.
101' SILKY SKILLS
Slick ball skills see Paul Pogba very nearly past Raphael Guerreiro, who manages to get in a last-instant toe-end to put the ball out for a corner. Antoine Griezmann sends it sailing over erveybody's heads.
98' YELLOW CARD
William Carvalho decides he's not letting Kingsley Coman get away and stretches out a telescopic leg to bring down the flying youngster. Yet another yellow card is the outcome.
97' YELLOW CARD
The cards are flying now; Blaise Matuidi stands still as Eder jumps over him and thumps into the grass, and is shown a very harsh yellow for his (in)action.
95' YELLOW CARD
Raphael Guerreiro picks up a late caution for upending Moussa Sissoko over by the touchline.
95' PEPE OFFSIDE
Pepe flicks a header just wide from Ricardo Quaresma's free kick, but the flag had been raised for offside.
94' POSSESSION PLAY
Portugal have taken on the role of custodians of the ball, with France hardly getting a touch since extra time kicked off. Turning that possession into openings is a different matter, as we can see from the previous 90 minutes.
91' EXTRA TIME: FIRST HALF
A French rendition of the Icelandic thunderclap heralds the start of the opening period of extra time. Will we see this final resolved before penalties make their unwanted appearance?
90' CAPTAIN'S CONTRIBUTION
Cristiano Ronaldo is out on the pitch and giving his teammates pep talks as they receive a brief bit of treatment before we kick off once again. It turns out he isn't just about the personal glory.
90' FULL TIME: EXTRA TIME
The 2016 European Championship final is the first to finish goalless. Some might say that's a reflection of the competition as as whole, but we're guaranteed drama in the next 30 minutes as first stoppage time and then perhaps penalties decide who takes home the cup.
90' OFF THE POST
Unbelievable! Gignac creates and wastes a golden chance to win the Championship for France in stoppage time, twisting back inside Pepe four yards out before scuffing his eventual shot past Patricio but against the base of the left-hand post.
90' NO WAY PAST PEPE
Griezmann rolls a pass out to the right wing for Bacary Sagna, who bends an inviting cross into the centre for Andre-Pierre Gignac. Even the burly striker can't summon the muscle to force aside the superb Pepe, and Patricio is able to collect.
87' TIRED LEGS
Sissoko attempts to spring the Portugal defence with a chipped ball over the top for Griezmann, whose legs can't carry him with their usual rapidity. It rolls harmlessly through to the keeper; extra time now seems all but inevitable.
84' LATE DRAMA
Moussa Sissoko picks up the ball and drives forward as he did so frequently in the first half, belting an effort towards goal that brings an excellent reaction save from Rui Patricio. The action is getting heated as the players realise they're heading for a taxing spell of extra time.
81' PORTUGAL PRESSING
Portugal come to life; first Ricardo Quaresma sees an overhead kick saved by Hugo Lloris, before the France keeper has to leap acrobatically to palm a Nani curler over the bar.
80' YELLOW CARD
Samuel Umtiti picks up a caution for a late challenge; there are some tired legs out there now.
79' SUBSTITUTION
Renato Sanches is withdrawn in favour of Eder; we've seen a future world star here in France in the shape of the Portugal youngster.
78' SUBSTITUTION
That proves to be Giroud's final act, the striker making way for Andre-Pierre Gignac.
77' OWN INTERCEPTION
Giroud stretches backwards to reach Coman's cutback, and therein loses the ball, unaware that behind him Griezmann was winding up to shoot from close range.
75' CLASSY COMAN
Coman has been a real livewire since coming on, and this time he slips a lovely pass between defenders for Giroud, whose fierce strike forces Patricio to dive and palm the ball away, with nobody in blue on hand to follow it up.
73' EVRA CAN'T CONNECT
Griezmann's corner seems to evade everybody right in front of goal; a single touch from Evra, who was in attendance, would have seen the ball hit the back of the net, but instead the experienced defender misses it entirely.
70' STRONG CONTENDERS
Many were predicting that France would walk all over Portugal tonight, but it's been far from the case, even with Cristiano Ronaldo making a premature departure. They look quite capable of keeping Griezmann and co at bay.
67' COMAN OFF TARGET
Coman spots a gap 20 yards out and goes for the bottom corner, the Bayern Munich man's low drive ending up several yards wide of the target.
66' SUBSTITUTION
Fernando Santos sends on Joao Moutinho, who was in his starting line-up when the tournament began, to try to unpick the France defence. Adrien Silva is the man to make way for the playmaker.
66' WHAT A CHANCE!
Antoine Griezmann squanders the chance of the match so far, leaping in front of Raphael Guerreiro to connect with Kingsley Coman's left-sided cross but surprisingly glancing his header over the bar.
65' FRANCE ON TOP
France are enjoying a spell of superiority, with the passes finding their man more regularly than Portugal would like.
62' YELLOW CARD
Joao Mario cynically trips Olivier Giroud from behind, earning himself a booking.
61' A BEAST IS BORN
Renato Sanches looks baffled after being pulled up for a foul on Blaise Matuidi in the centre of the park. It's incredible to see an 18-year-old with his formidable body strength; just imagine what he'll be like in five years' time.
58' SUBSTITUTION
Didier Deschamps decides to try something different, introducing Kingsley Coman for Dimitri Payet, who has faded since his scintillating start to the tournament. Shortly after that Griezmann hares onto a long ball and drags a low strike directly at Rui Patricio from an admittedly difficult angle.
57' EVEN STEVENS
The level of effort and commitment hasn't let up from either set of players; nobody wants to give any ground when the stakes are this high, but surely nobody will want this to go to the agony of penalties.
54' POGBA GOES FOR GOAL
Paul Pogba takes aim from some distance and sends a powerful strike curling over the crossbar. The look of massive disappointment on the young midfielder's face reflects the magnitude of the occasion.
52' PERFECT PEPE
Pepe steps in at the last moment to take the ball away from Antoine Griezmann with a perfectly-timed and sufficiently aggressive tackle. The much-maligned centre back has been colossal so far tonight.
49' NANI COMES UP SHORT
Portugal have burst out of the blocks, with Cedric Soares sneaking in behind Patrice Evra to curl over one delicate cross that proves too high for the diminutive Nani.
46' SECOND HALF
The two coaches have both resisted the temptation to make changes at half time, and we're back underway here at the Stade de France. At least 45 minutes of final remain.
45' NO RONALDO, FEW CHANCES
A horribly-timed injury has done for Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portugal superstar being forced to leave the action in floods of tears after 25 minutes, having tried and failed to carry on twice following an unfortunate clash of knees with Dimitri Payet. That unfortunate event meant reorganisation for his team, who sent on Ricardo Quaresma to pack the midfield. Since that moment chances have been few and far between, whereas the action-packed early stages saw Rui Patricio save acrobatically from Antoine Griezmann, while Nani thrashed a half-volley over the crossbar. Later on Jose Fonte headed a corner straight at Hugo Lloris and Moussa Sissoko saw a close-range effort parried after turning Cedric Soares, but both sides are so well-organised that the attacking players on the pitch are finding things difficult. Stay tuned for the second half of the final of Euro 2016.
45' HALF TIME PORTUGAL 0 FRANCE 0
Referee Mark Clattenburg blows the half time whistle; it's goalless at the interval of the Euro 2016 final.
45' HEAD BOYS
Joao Mario and Patrice Evra briefly draw the attention of the doctors after suffering a nasty clash of heads, but the battling pair are soon allowed back onto the pitch.
45' GRIEZMANN'S TOIL
Griezmann looks frustrated as he runs into Soares and takes a tumble under Sagna's cross. Pepe has mostly had the French starlet under wraps this evening.
42' UNIVERSAL COMMITMENT
With half time fast approaching, we haven't seen a goal yet, but both sides are approaching this game as if they're desperate to win (and so they should be). The sweat is visible on every brow, and if Portugal have been knocked by the loss of Ronaldo they're not showing it.
39' END-TO-END STUFF
Fonte gets up above his marker to apply a header to Mario's corner, but it's too weak to trouble Lloris. France then go straight up the other end, where a Giroud header is similarly saved.
38' SLUGGISH SILVA
Silva is too slow to get his shot off on the 18-yard line, allowing Laurent Koscielny to get a foot in, but the Arsenal man's poke rolls to Guerreiro, whose dragged effort deflects off a French boot for a corner.
37' LOOSE TOUCH
Raphael Guerreiro tries to make something happen as he charges onto Nani's knockback, but the left back's touch is a little loose and Samuel Umtiti is able to hack it clear.
34' YELLOW CARD
Cedric Soares' name is the first into the referee's notebook as the defender goes in with an unnecessary high boot on Payet.
33' DOUGHTY DEFENCES
Chances have been few and far between since the opening stages; following a theme of the tournament, both defences look superbly organised and ready to withstand anything. Portugal now have a five-man midfield following Ronaldo's departure, so they appear even tougher to break down.
32' STRAIGHT AT THE KEEPER
Sissoko bamboozles Silva with a clever turn and shoots with power from close range, but it's too close to Patricio, who is able to parry.
30' SISSOKO SEIZING THE DAY
Moussa Sissoko pirouettes on a short pass from Bacary Sagna and then storms past three Portugal players to force a corner. The set-piece comes to nothing, but Sissoko is on fire tonight.
27' SIMPLE FOR LLORIS
Ricardo Quaresma works a yard of space on the right flank and plays in Soares on the overlap; the right back dinks a cross to the back stick, where Joao Mario can only direct a tame header down into the turf and through to Hugo Lloris.
25' RONALDO'S LAST STAND
Ronaldo tries and fails to jump for a cross, and Adrien Silva sends the follow-up miles wide. At that Portugal's captain acknowledges his night is over and is carried from the field on a stretcher in very obvious distress. Almost every person in the stadium applauds his exit, while Ricardo Quaresma is sent on in his place.
22' SUPER SISSOKO
Sissoko, unrecognisable from the player who turned out for Newcastle this season, charges through the centre from the halfway line and sends a powerful drive rising just over the bar.
21' RONALDO RETURNS
Ronaldo is back on the pitch with his left knee heavily strapped. Let's hope he's not going against all medical advice.
20' PRESCIENT PEPE
Pepe steps in to smash the ball clear as Giroud leads a France break, giving his side vital breathing room while they have ten men on the pitch.
18' GAME OVER FOR RONALDO?
The tears are visible in Cristiano Ronaldo's eyes as he sits down with a thump. It looks like his night is almost certainly over, and France will be rubbing their hands with absolute glee. What a massive shame that we might not get to see the biggest player at the tournament make his mark on the biggest stage.
15' SLOW SPELL
France have slowed the game down now and are passing the ball around at the back without much in the way of urgency. That could be playing right into their opponents' hands.
12' WOUNDED SOLDIER
Ronaldo has rejoined the action but is limping slightly at the moment. Let's hope he recovers for the sake of the spectacle.
10' FRANCE PRESSING
Payet curls in a cross from the left, and Rui Patricio pulls off an agile save to tip Griezmann's looping header just over the bar. Payet takes the corner, laser guiding it onto the head of Olivier Giroud, who plants his effort straight at the relieved goalkeeper.
9' RONALDO HURT
Portugal sweat as Cristiano Ronaldo lies prone on the turf with a look of agony on his face. Dimitri Payet's knee accidentally collided with the Real Madrid man's as the pair challenged for the ball; those ones really do hurt.
7' FRENCH THREAT
France continue to threaten as Griezmann bursts through the defence on the left-hand side of the box and thrashes a hasty shot into the side-netting.
6' WILD VOLLEY
Jose Fonte leaps to nod Antoine Griezmann's headed flick away from goal, but it falls to straight to Moussa Sissoko, who blazes his volley well over from the edge of the penalty area.
4' OVER FROM NANI
Cedric Soares spots the run of Nani, who controls the long pass as he sprints in behind the defence and swivels to fire off a half-volley that flies over the top of the crossbar. That attack came against the run of play so far.
1' KICK OFF
The 2016 European Championship final is underway at the Stade de France.
0' ONCE IN A LIFETIME
Both teams looks serious as they march out of the tunnel, and well they might. Many of these players might never have this opportunity again.
0' GUETTA'S MOMENT
David Guetta bounces onto the pitch for a very brief DJ slot in front of a giant inflatable trophy as the closing ceremony wraps up. Not long until kick off now.
0' STORY OF THE TOURNAMENT
It's been a tournament with plenty of stories, from plucky Wales and Iceland reaching hitherto unscaled heights to giants Germany and Spain being exposed by more vigorous rivals. From loathsome hooliganism in the early stages to unbridled partying in the latter, and with every country bringing something to the table (except perhaps Russia). If only it didn't have to end, but that's how finals work.
0' HOME ADVANTAGE
France have never lost a European Championships finals match at the Stade de France, so it's clear how much this grand stadium can add to the team's performance.
0' FRANCE TEAM NEWS
France coach Didier Deschamps has decided against shaking up the team that played so well against Germany, which means keeping faith with Samuel Umtiti at centre back and Moussa Sissoko in midfield, while Adil Rami and N'Golo Kante remain on the sidelines.
0' PORTUGAL TEAM NEWS
Pepe returns to the defence after recovering from a thigh problem, with Bruno Alves making way, while William Carvalho replaces Danilo Pereira in the midfield anchor role. Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani continue to form a two-pronged attack.
0' PORTUGAL V FRANCE
Four weeks of top-drawer international football come to a head tonight as Portugal take on hosts France in the final of the 2016 European Championships. For millions of fans, not just in those two countries but around Europe and the world, matches don’t come much bigger than this. Not many would have fancied Fernando Santos’ Portugal to make it this far, and until the 2-0 semi-final win over Wales they had failed to win a game in normal time. But the second half of that match reminded us of what Cristiano Ronaldo and co are capable of, and they’re coming into form at precisely the right time. The same, of course, could be said of Les Bleus, who stunned Germany with a deserved 2-0 semi-final victory, despite their opponents dominating possession for much of the match. With weapons such as tournament top goalscorer Antoine Griezmann on the pitch and a fervent crowd cheering them on, France look like favourites to take home the trophy for the third time. Join me, Luke Ostler, at 9pm CET to see who will triumph at the Stade de France.
0' ONE TO WATCH
France may have the stronger teamsheet overall, but such is the ability of Cristiano Ronaldo that if the Portugal captain hits top form tonight it’s unlikely that he could be stopped. This stage is made for a player of Ronaldo’s incredible stature, and a continuation of the upward trajectory that saw him stand out in the second half against Wales could bring home the trophy for Portugal as well as cementing his place among the greatest players of all time. He'd like the sound of that very much.
